Kinja'd!!!

Saw !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! come through my Facebook feed a few times. Apparently we had some mutual friends though I have no other connection to the kid. I hate to jump to conclusions, but based on the lack of helmet, excessive speed, and the fact that the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved , it seems like this 21 year-old guy was probably killed by his own feelings of invincibility. It’s an attitude that far too many people (mostly young guys) on sport bikes seem to have, and it can have horrible consequences. The poor family.

More like completely avoidable. I grew up in a helmet law state, Georgia, now that I live in a state without a helmet law, South Carolina, I see so many people without helmets. I don’t understand it.

yep. I hear these packs of stupid fuckwad squids screaming up and down I-94 at 2, 3, 4 in the morning. I care not one bit if any of them splatter themselves. so long as they don’t take anyone innocent along with them.

oh, and charge their families for the cleanup.

yep. 90% of bike accidents could have been prevented by the rider.

“was probably killed by his own feelings of invincibility. It’s an attitude that far too many people (mostly young guys) on sport bikes seem to have”

I’ve been trying to find a way to “illustrate” this feeling (the feeling of “go fast, but don’t die”) as a tribute to a friend who was killed on a motorcycle. The accident that killed him was not his fault, but we all could have been easily killed growing up because we were careless on a motor vehicle ”

I wouldn’t say it was a consistent attitude, and I don’t think any of us thought we were invincible but 3 or 4 of us were so hooked on going fast that we just let it take over sometimes they way I would guess an addict does. I remember thinking I know this is dangerous and I know this is wrong but...it’s time to go FAST! Personally I have only wrecked once doing something stupid, but it was real stupid and caused a lot of damage to a brand new car. That was enough for me.

Late teens to mid twenties is an odd time particularly for a petrolheaded male. We’ll often talk about how stupid we once were, and someone will inevitably say, “I can’t believe we all made it.” To which I can’t help myself from responding “we fucking didn’t...”

Anyway, I feel bad for his family and friends.

“oh, and charge their families for the cleanup”

While I totally understand why you would say/thinking, it is at the very least too soon.

... Maybe vehicle insurance should cover it, but each state is different.

As I child I spent a decade bouncing from bad landings and mostly walking away. But now that I’ve helped raise kids I find you never really understand a lesson until you live it.

Without a nearly traumatic sense of mortality instilled by tragedy as a young age, people seem to find out the sad way that your body isn’t invincible and the human body is incredibly fragile compared to machines.

It sucks that people are designed to wind up dying simply because so many of them don’t know what they  don’t know.

Here’s one of my favorite songs, one in which that line is part of the lyrics.  I first heard it on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 soundtrack nearly 20 years ago:

I was paraphrasing from T erminator 2, A hnold as the terminator says (referring to humans), “It is in your nature to destroy yourselves.”

Evel Kineval on the radio arguing with his son Robbie, because RK received a ticket for not wearing a helmet:

Remember the nursery rhyme I used to tell you about? Humpty D umpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall, all the kings men could not put Humpty back together again because Humpty was too f—-ing stupid to not wear a damn helmet

On an Agusta or just fast bike pic, sorry I didn’t read it all ? It’s story told too many times, even back to TE Lawrence on his Brough, he died shortly after from a head injury in the hospital , it is thought he would have lived with a modern helmet, he had nothing on of course back in post WWI times. He lived through WWI and died running off the road to avoid people, they found the bike had been downshifted so that’s all he could do . I quit riding two wheeled things, it’s not worth it to me being married , I already surf and that isn’t too crazy given that I grew up in the water but it’s still a risk.

But then you ruined it with that line about charging families for the cleanup. How about no? Squids are dicks and playing stupid games earns you stupid prizes, but there’s literally no reason to punish their family. Got enough of that crap going on in this country with debts of dead family being inherited by next of kin . Nah, the sole responsibility should be on the person making the bad decision.

Feel bad for the rider and their family. Bad decisions or not it’s still a life lost.

I just wish stories like these (and no seatbelt fatalities in cars) would actually convince people to be responsible adults. At least a good 6 0% of the riders I see in Illinois wear so little they’d probably get severely hurt dropping a bike in a parking lot, let alone an actual crash on the roads.

Yeah, I know...Sadly, for some it’s something they’ll never learn until it’s too late.

Still shaking my head over the older rider that told me not to wear a helmet because they, quote: “trap all the forces in your head”.

....and half of all moto fatalities  involve a rider that has been drinking.

Motorcycling is exponentially safer if you simply wear a helmet, and don’t drink & ride.

This is usually what keeps me from getting another bike. I like bikes, I like riding, but the risk is quite high, even if as the rider you are doing everything properly... someone or something else can get you.

I know that can happen in any vehicle... but the exposure to external forces is much greater.

It becomes an issue of having to encase yourself in a suit of armor to even get on a bike, which is a tedious, hot, sweaty hassle, just for the priviledge of riding an increasingly expensive machine the few times that enough free time without other obligations, and decent weather coincide...

I am envious of the people who can make the practical calculus work to have gear ready and have time, and not have other obligations, or other circumstances that reduce the opportunity to ride,

However, that 23K new Ducati Diavel 1260 S I would like to own, plus another couple grand in safety gear, not to mention insurance premiums... my cost per mile per year would be significantly high. Possibly hundreds or even thousands of dollars per ride... to put myself at the mercy of phone-worshipping hazardous drivers, and continually degrading pavement conditions.

Of course I could buy used and cut that expense way back... but still is a significant amount of money for not much time, and a whole lot of danger. But bikes are such cool, and fun machines, on the other hand.

You are correct, 1/3 of all fatalities include a drunk rider.

I mean..I’ve been on sportbikes for 8 years now, starting at 16.

its a LARGE miracle that i am still alive. and I’ve never really hrut myself either. Worst I had was a low side at the track that left my limping for a few days, but no rash, borken bones or anything
